5 tips for staying active on staycation

More and more people are turning to staycations nowadays, instead of hopping on a plane to explore the world. Whether you’re taking a week off work to sit under your duvet watching Netflix or you’re just visiting another part of your home country, a staycation is a great way to get some R & R. However, that doesn’t mean you can’t stay active in between all that lounging around. Here are some top tips for staying active on a staycation.

Get outside

Let’s kick off with the easiest and best way to stay active: getting outside. The last thing you want after your staycation is to feel worse than when you started, simply because you haven’t stepped outside all week.

Make it your mission to get some fresh air, come rain or shine. You could even schedule in a hike if there are places to explore nearby – we have a great beginner’s guide if you don’t know where to start! The fresh air and Vitamin D from going outside and walking around will help you feel refreshed, even if you do then go back inside and under the duvet.

Find the one thing

According to Ben Groundwater’s blog on 1Cover, there's one thing you should do in every country. If you’re having a staycation in your home country but don’t really know where to explore, have a look at his The One Thing blog. In Canada, for example, it’s hiking in the remote wilderness of the Yukon. If you’re in New Zealand, the ‘one thing’ you should do is leap off something high. That’ll get your blood pumping and keep you active!

Exercise in front of Netflix

If you’re taking the word ‘staycation’ literally and planning on not moving from your home for a week, then this is a super smart way to keep active. Grab yourself an exercise bike or treadmill (borrow one if you have to) and set it up in front of the TV. Tell yourself that you can’t watch an episode of your favourite show unless you’re working out. If you stop, the TV goes off. Now, pick something binge-worthy, and you’ll be running or cycling for hours.

You don’t need to do this every day, but sometimes laying in front of the TV all day can make you feel sluggish or ill. No one needs that on any kind of vacation!

 Couch exercises

Along similar lines, did you know that there are plenty of exercises you can actually do on your couch? Yep! There are couch dips, the couch bike, the comfy plank, lunges, and a whole lot more. Again, you can do this in front of the TV if you really want to, but at least it will get that blood pumping and make you feel more energised.

A dip in the pool

Lucky enough to live near a pool? Or even the sea? Go for an early morning swim before you do anything else. Swimming is one of the best exercises you can do, as it works out the whole body but is also low impact. You won’t feel like you’ve been staying active just by splashing about in the water. It’s the ultimate way to start any day on staycation.

A staycation can be the perfect chance to slob out, but you might end up going back to work feeling like you need another break. Squeeze in some activities, and you’ll feel energised, healthier, and happier by the end of your vacation. So, which one are you going to try? Let us know in the comments.
